Here you will find out everything you need to know about being a member of the school council from how to become one, to the roles and responsibilities of a councillor.

Elections

Every new year in September we hold our School Council Elections and each of the reception and KS1 classes elect two representatives to become part of the school council. When you are elected you receive a yellow arm band with the words school council written on it and a pin badge for you to wear during the school day. This way everyone knows who you are and who represents the student voice.

Being a school councillor is a very responsible position as you have to have a lot of sensible ideas and sometimes have to do things in your lunch times. It is your chance to play an important part in our Cotmanhay community. You may feel a little nervous about putting yourself up for election but it is exciting to see what happens when people share their ideas so be brave!

If you think you would like to represent your class, but missed out there is always the opportunity the following year.

What do the School Council do?

The School Council take part in lots of activities including:

• Listening to the views and concerns of other pupils
• Representing these concerns to teachers, Miss Dawson and other adults
• Coming up with ideas to help improve the school and make decisions
• Thinking of ways to contribute to our local environment
• Fundraising events for Cotmanhay and other charities

The School Council meet regularly and are involved in making decisions about all aspects of school life. They consult with the children in their classes and put forward suggestions to improve the quality of the school environment. The school council help out with parent mornings, parent evenings, special assemblies, nativity, harvest festival, the school fayre and many more events. They report to the rest of the school in assemblies and have a suggestions box that all children can access. The school council collect these and share as a group.

Some of the projects they have proposed have already been successfully put in place, such as:

The book area on the playground for somewhere to read, more climbing equipment on the playground, being a friend at lunchtime awards, improvement in the school playground and additions to classroom resources. We look forward to more ideas.
